2025 - Fall Fishing Report

Fall is here and that means serious trout fishing is underway!

Since early October, the state has been stocking rivers out in the western part of the state but has not been stocking eastern rivers due to low water levels.

The Rose River Farm continues to stock its private waters on the Rose Rive with outstanding Rainbows!

TU has also stocked its limited access section of the Moormans River.

While water temperatures are largely good in eastern central Virginia, water levels remain low--and we need more rain.

Low clearer water can be challenging because trout can see you as you approach the river banks.  Remember to dress in muted tones and be stealthy as you approach your target pools.

Fortunately, we have guides and staff on the water daily, so we know how to handle these conditions.

For the best outcomes, we recommend using lighter tippet, longer leaders and smaller flies.  Dry droppers rigs are working better than traditional nymphing with indicators.  Avoid too many false casts and target specific hiding spots.

Too many false casts or letting the fly hit the water too hard spook trout into the current condition.

If the trout are shying away from your fly at the last second, you might want to reduce your tippet and your fly size down a notch.

Fly selection is critical this time of year!

For dry flies, caddis, Mr Rapidan parachute’s, chubby chernobyl’s and ant patterns have been effective.

For nymphs, try hare's ears, pheasant tail, stoneflies as a lead nymph.

For smaller nymphs, and for trail nymphs, midges, caddis pupa, rainbow warriors, RS2s, and copper johns have been effective.

Streamer fishing is still very effective as trout begin to actively feed on the local minnows in the deep pools.  Small black and chartreuse woolly buggers fished with a fast retrieval are working well!
