2025 - Fall Fishing Report

Wintertime is a great time to go trout fishing!  Its less crowded and starkly beautiful fly fishing in the local rivers.

So far, the Virginia Department of Wildlife has not stocked the rivers east of the blue ridge mountains. Hopefully, the recent snow and wetter weather will change that around.

Brook trout are finishing up their spawning season at the end of December. So, start thinking about fishing for them on nice winter days.

The Rose River Farm continues to stock its private waters on the Rose Rive with outstanding Rainbows!

While water temperatures are good in eastern central Virginia, water levels remain low--and we need more rain.

Low clearer water can be challenging because trout can see you as you approach the riverbanks.  Remember to dress in muted tones and be stealthy as you approach your target pools.

For the best outcomes, we recommend using lighter tippet, longer leaders and smaller flies.  Dry dropper rigs are working better than traditional nymphing with indicators.  Avoid too many false casts and target specific hiding spots.

Too many false casts or letting the fly hit the water too hard spook trout into the current condition.

If the trout are shying away from your fly at the last second, you might want to reduce your tippet and your fly size down a notch.

Fly selection is critical this time of year!
